Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiology is a specialty that diagnoses and treats heart and blood vessel conditions using small tubes called catheters. Working with these small tubes allows providers to avoid doing open-heart surgery. They can achieve results that can be lifesaving, like when treating a heart attack.

Interventional Cardiology

Coronary Interventions (Blood Vessels of the Heart)
  • Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) / Angioplasty and Stenting:
Uses a catheter with a balloon to open blocked coronary arteries and then places a stent to keep the artery open.

  • A catheter with a small drill or laser is used to remove plaque from a narrowed artery.

  • Coronary Angiography:
An angiogram is a diagnostic test using dye and X-rays to visualize blood flow in the heart.

  • Coronary Physiology Testing:
Involves measuring fractional flow reserve (FFR) to assess blood flow within the coronary arteries, helping to guide intervention.

Structural Heart Interventions (Heart Structure and Valves)
  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR): A catheter is used to replace a narrowed aortic valve.

  • Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair: Non-surgical repair of the mitral valve using devices like the MitraClip™.

  • Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Closure: A procedure to close a small hole in the heart wall between the upper chambers.

  • Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) Closure: Similar to PFO closure, but for different locations of holes in the heart.

  • Valvuloplasty: Balloon-based procedures to widen narrowed heart valves.

Other Vascular Interventions

Treatments in interventional cardiology are minimally invasive procedures that use catheters to diagnose and treat heart and blood vessel conditions, avoiding the need for open-heart surgery. Common treatments include angioplasty with stenting to open blocked arteries, valvuloplasty to treat narrow heart valves, and septal defect closure to seal holes in the heartOther procedures address thickened heart muscle (alcohol septal ablation) and can even be used to treat peripheral artery disease.

Catheter-Based Procedures
Structural Heart Disease Treatments
  • A balloon is used to open a narrowed heart valve, such as the aortic or mitral valve.

  • Septal Defect Closure:
A "plug" or device is inserted through a catheter to close holes in the heart's walls, like an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) or Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).
